Overcoming fear with hypnotherapy.

Don't let fear hold you back from getting what you want in life.

Last week on my facebook page I wrote about how fear can keep us stuck from moving forwards, frozen in indecision.
Fear is a natural reaction and part of our natural fight or flight protection mechanism designed to keep us safe from potentially harmful risky situations.

People experience fear either when an event or situation that is outside of their comfort zone comes into conscious awareness either for the first time in instinctive reaction or something that has been experienced previously that is the same or similar to that original event. The intensity of fear experienced and how the person deals with it is directly proportional to the persons reaction to the fear.
Some people can appear to be fearful of events or situations that would surprise other people because those people or persons do not understand what the person experiencing the fear is going through in their mind.

Fear can sometimes have its roots in events in the distant past and in events which are repressed memories long forgotten and the person may not even understand why they experience their particular issue. The experience of fear can simply be fear of the unknown and it can cause us so many problems. Ask any business person who has never had to publicly speak before or a sales professional starting a new venture which requires independence tenacity and self confidence, they may all at times experience fears which may limit them if they do nothing about the situation and let those fears hold them back.

Its Ok to experience fear as it is a protection mechanism designed to keep us safe but there are some situations when that fear can be counter productive and hold us back. For example, about twenty years ago I used to sail dinghies actively at an inshore sailing club in Kent. I'm not a particularly confident swimmer at all and I hated capsizing and I had a real fear of water, born of a childhood experience where I almost drowned. Learning to sail I had to go through capsize drill and I hated that. Being in the water caused me to go into blind panic even though I had a buoyancy aid on. I battled on through and did my capsize drill, got my level 1 certificate and off I went.

I started off sailing with a topper dinghy which is a fairly easy to manage boat, quite benign and not prone to capsizing often. As my confidence improved I upgraded to a new much faster boat , a  Byte which really was way out of my comfort zone and had a reputation for being very tricky to handle, however I thought I could handle it. I found it a joy to sail in calm weather which is why I bought it in the first place. However in windy conditions it was simply very frightening and my fears increased with every experience in rough weather. One day I capsized badly after gybing round a mark on the race course and the wind caught the sail and the boom flew across and struck my head and knocked me out of the boat with the boat falling over on top of me. I went right under the water and got tangled up in the ropes (sheets for those of you who understand sailing jargon) All I remember was seeing the green of the water and trying to hold my breath in a dazed semi concussed state as I grappled with trying to extricate myself from the ropes and remain calm. That event was so powerful that I lost all confidence as the fear grew and I simply couldn't go back in the water for well over a year until I decided to deal with my fear and do something about it. I eventually decided to go back into the water but only after I sold the Byte and bought something less challenging and more in line with my abilities.

Fears can be overcome in different ways but since I started working in the field of hypnotherapy almost ten years ago I understand how some fears can keep us rooted to the spot in indecision and I also understand too that hypnosis offers us the quickest way to overturn our fears. I only wish I new that back in 1999 when I got knocked out of my boat and it took me so long to face my fear and deal with it. I lost all that time not being able to engage in the sport I really loved.

Now sometimes as therapists we get enquiries from clients who even when they understand all that hypnotherapy can do for them still remain frozen in fear unable to move forwards and what happened recently to a whole group of therapists I network with bore this out to be true.

Most people within the network all started getting the same enquiries from a person wanting to know about how we could help them dealing with constant stress, anxiety and social phobia. That person would spend a lot of time talking and fact finding and make a booking for an on line session or to show up in person and never followed through. Over about a week eventually we all must have received around four maybe five calls each with some people receiving ten calls and each time the same pattern. The person would call at the most inappropriate of times, in the evening, first thing in the morning,Sunday As therapists we can all understand and empathise with this persons fear which must be very great indeed to keep working through therapist after therapist and not follow through.

An extreme case of fear if ever there was one holding the person back from taking action, but until that person finds the courage to take the action that deep down inside they know they need to take and get help with their anxiety issues they will stay stuck in what must be a prison of internal conflict and torment.

As therapists we know we can help and guide but the client has to be in that place where first they want to help themselves. Once the choice is made by the client to reach out, we do everything we can to help them overcome their fears and get to where they want to be and it is so very uplifting when we are able to help people through those changes as I have been able to do. Fears and phobias are very treatable and even a fear of fear itself of what happens if I do, what's on the other side is treatable too, we can help when people are ready to entrust us to empower them to use their own inner resources to make those changes and hypnotherapy can be a very powerful magic wand indeed.

Hypnotherapy can help you overcome your fears and give you back your freedom
