When therapy is a no no because the timing isn't right .

New blog added 19th October 2016

Situations where therapy is not a good idea.

As therapists we have an ethical and moral obligation to our clients to carefully weigh up what is in their best interests which sometimes may well see us turning clients away. It is better to give the right advice than set someone up for high expectation and failure with all of the possible harm that those emotions can do.

Yesterday I took an enquiry from a parent who wondered if therapy could help their 16 year old to prepare themselves for a maths exam. On the face of it, the enquiry, without more background information seems a reasonable idea with firm possibilities.I say 'possibilities' with some reservations because there needs to be far more information gathered before processing whether it would be appropriate or not to use therapy to help improve self confidence for example, because ability needs to taken into account too. Now treating for anxiety is another issue altogether.

After gathering the information I put it to the the parent that in my view therapy would not be a good idea at the moment. You see the teenager had taken two maths exams previously and whilst academically competent in all the other areas, maths is definitely not a strong point which was evident from the previous grades.

The parents enquiry came from a good place of wanting to equip their teenager with the best chances of success and wondered if Hypnotherapy for lowering anxiety and improving confidence might help.Having explained to me that the exam was only a couple of weeks away and coupled with the fact that their teenager was undergoing extra tuition I foresaw a potentially difficult situation developing of ever increasing pressure and of expectations possibly not being met and how that might impact upon their teenagers self esteem. What I explored with the parent was their child's acumen and ability in the subject of maths.
It was clear from the outset that the teenager was feeling pressure which may in all likelihood be compounded by the teachers feedback to the parent about the pupil and how the pupil approaches the subject.

Considering the information imparted, the natural direction to take the conversation was to explore if their teenager actually had good ability in maths and it was clear that they struggled hence the need for additional tutoring.
Hearing what I was saying, the parent took my comments on board about pressure and went on to consider whether putting off this upcoming maths exam until next year in order to help their teenager improve over time with extra studies was a better idea as it meant less pressure. "A good idea I think."

My deep concern is in equipping someone to beleive they can feel succesful and positive to achive something they do not have the requisite skills for yet is setting them up for failure and disappointment and to not feel good enough. This is potentially a very harmful outcome as far as how that person may well view themselves.
Whether we think we are "good enough" is really not important as that can set us up for low self esteem and disappointment.
We can be our own worst inner critics and we most likely give ourselves a harder time than other people's views of us. The idea of being "good enough" is often judgemental in a negative sense whether it comes from ourselves or others.

What is important is that we try our best with enthusiasm and intent to learn and develop and that we try our best coming from a place of good intent honour and integrity. It is important that we know our strengths and weaknesses and in being honest with those weaknesses if it is something we really want to work on then one can devote the time needed to learn and acquire those skills if that is what is important to us........ But it has to be for us and not to please someone else because in time, if we are not being true to ourselves we may find ourselves in a very unhappy situation of not living our truth.

How to choose a good therapist

New Blog added 26th January 2016

When choosing a therapist the best advice I can give to anyone considering hypnotherapy or any other mind based therapy is to choose a therapist with great care and consideration and who is the following:-

(a) properly qualified.

(There is no regulatory law at present in the UK which requires a practitioner to be properly qualified by law and licensed to practice.Anyone can set themselves up as a hypnotherapist with no professional qualifications whatsoever)

(b) has public liability insurance and who is upfront about disclosing their professional credentials.

(c) belongs to a governing professional body which means they are bound by a strict code of ethics.

(d) choose a therapist who you feel a good rapport with and who you feel you can put your trust in.

Remember that a good therapist is not about themselves and how clever and brilliant they are and and how they can make you do something and how many people they have put through their practice, its about you, all about you and empowering you to make those inner changes.A good therapist should be empathic, patient, able to listen and work creatively with you and should be flexible enough to help you through resistance, challenges, fears etc. A good therapist should also not be afraid of telling you like it is when necessary and find a way that inspires you to achieve rather than leaving you feeling a failure.A good therapist is all about helping you to facilitate personal change and growth.

BWRT VIDEO TESTIMONIAL

Trevor Wales & BWRT® Cornwall - Helping improve peoples lives person by person.

What is BWRT ® and how much does a programme of sessions cost?

BWRT ®’ stands for ‘Brain Working Recursive Therapy®’, a model of psychology and psychotherapy created by UK professional therapist, Terence Watts, MCGI.
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT ®) is a revolution in the world of complementary therapy and self - development. It is a unique talking therapy like no other, one that gets results, based upon the latest scientific and neurological discoveries about the way the human brain works.

BWRT® is a thoroughly modern methodology that draws on the latest research into the understanding of the human brain and the way our patterns of thought affect our wellbeing, and how those thought patterns affects our moods, behaviour, emotions, and actions.

BWRT ® empowers people to create positive changes in their wellbeing and emotional state with all sorts of life’s difficulties from the minor troubles, aliments and challenges of everyday life all the way up to many of life’s very serious issues.

It has a track record of being very useful for helping people to effectively manage a wide range of presenting challenges and issues. Just taking a look at the testimonial content on my testimonial pages and the main BWRT® website from the many clients who have benefited will readily bear this point out. Find out more at www.bwrt.org

There are many different styles of therapy available these days but there is nothing else like this one. There simply is no other therapy in the world that is the same as BWRT ®.

It is a content free form of Psychotherapy that does not involve hypnosis or trance states and can work with a wide spectrum of people and is also well suited to people where due to certain health conditions such as epilepsy and serious heart conditions or the very early stages of pregnancy hypnosis could be unsuitable.

How much does a programme of sessions cost?
The fee structure of BWRT is exactly the same hourly rate as Hypnotherapy and for information please refer to the fees page.

* An initial consultation of thirty minutes is just £47.50. If you then decide to book a series of BWRT appointments following your consultation, a full refund of your consultation fee will be given off of your second session fee following your first two hour discounted full Fact - finding appointment.

There are three levels of BWRT. Levels 1- 3
Each level denotes the complexity of a presenting issue. I am qualified to work with levels 1 & 2. For information on level 3 work which deals with physical issues please refer to the main BWRT website at www.bwrt.org.

How do you determine what level of therapy needs to be used?
When a client comes to see me for a consultation to work with BWRT once an outline of the presenting issue is presented there is a simple and highly effective set of questions that determines an accurate assessment of the BWRT level we need to work with for effective therapy to take place.

Level one BWRT work is bookable session by session and is charged hourly at £95.00 per hour.
Many of life's presenting issues are resolvable using level 1 work, from the minor irritations of life to the fairly complex. A typical level 1 session, beyond the initial two hour intake session, which is charged at the introductory discounted rate of £142.50,  is 90 minutes and charged at £142.50 per session.
Most level 1 work is typically completed within an intake session and one to
two additional sessions. There are occasions where more than two sessions may be needed depending upon the severity of the issue being presented by the client.

Level two sessions are only bookable in block sessions of an intake session, and five 90 - minute sessions, which must be paid in full in advance.
Level 2 work is for the more in depth & challenging presenting issues of life. There are many kinds of deep complex issues that have been resolved using level 2 work, issues such as Addictions, Poor self worth, Destructive Anger and so on.
I have worked with clients with level 2 work who have told me that they have had issues sometimes for many years that were just untouchable by other therapies that they worked with, but, discovering BRWT was a turning point and a game changer.

Why Level 2 sessions are only bookable in block sessions with payment in full in advance for the therapy programme.
This is because level two work is typically very complex and in depth, and for the therapy to stand a good potential of success, a firm commitment needs to be made to your success and see the programme through.

Please note there are no exceptions to this rule.
* Level 2  BWRT work will only be booked upon the understanding that the client is willing to invest in themselves and agree to the terms by paying for an intake session and a block of five therapy sessions. Before commencing work, payment must be made in full.

The success rates of level 2  work is very high, but, please note that depending upon each individual case that a recommendation can sometimes be required for further sessions which may be in the format of WSN Counselling, SymbioDynamics or Hypnotherapy.

A level 2 programme will cost you £855.00
As above in Level 1 appointments, if  you have  previously booked and paid for the initial 30 - minute consultation for £47.50, the fee will be deducted from your advance payment of £855.00 and will therefore be charged at £807.50

BWRT and how it works is centered around the discovery made by research scientist Benjamin Libet in the 1980's of how our human brains process information and our awareness of it. Libet was conducting experiments on free will and the question of whether we actually have free will or whether free will was just an illusion.

Unlike many other modern therapies, it is a totally confidential therapy that does not require you to reveal your personal or private secrets to your therapist. It allows a ‘core of privacy’ so that you do not have to divulge anything you would rather not talk about – so, you don’t need to discuss intimate details of your life with your therapist unless you want to. All the therapist needs to know is what’s not working in your life and you won’t be asked to talk about your sex-life, childhood, relationships, or anything else you would rather keep private and it is all carried out in a completely conscious state.

It's totally safe and sometimes needs only an initial intake session and a one or two sessions to resolve even apparently impossible problems - and therapy can be conducted with certain issues by video links such as Skype/Zoom or Facetime or even phone, so if you have difficulty in traveling or talking in a face-to-face situation, this therapy can still help you- Sometimes, shyness or embarrassment can prevent an individual from improving their life because they just can't contemplate the idea of a face-to-face session with a therapist... But now that fear can be consigned to the past and you won’t even need to travel from your home.

It uses a totally logical, practical and down-to-earth working method and for it to succeed only needs you to know what you want to change in your life-In fact, the practitioner only needs to know how you feel and how you would prefer to feel instead.

If you're looking for therapy, whatever your difficulty, it’s highly likely that this highly efficient relatively new therapy can help to set you totally free from it - so if you know just how you would like to be and feel but just haven’t been able to get to it, then BWRT® can help you find it quickly.

It’s not important if you’re just starting out in the world or have already been ‘around the block’ more than few times - no matter what time of life you’re in, BWRT® can help you actually choose the way you want to feel about almost anything. It is a fact that most people shouldn't really have problems. It's also a fact that most people do... But BWRT® means they no longer have to put up with them and 'just get on with it'.

BWRT® Explained. How does it work?

Our brain holds eighty-six billion neurons, and we have neuroplasticity within those structures. Our brain reroutes and assimilates, a bit like google and algorithms, it works out what is relevant and most prominent.
These patterns shift all the time, but anything linked to survival may appear higher, and so we can constantly get what we do not want, and this can become a limiting pattern, affecting our emotional wellbeing and life balance with some situations, which over time can become counterproductive and can affect our health adversely.

For e.g., patterns of what is termed a general anxiety disorder where there is no apparent specific reason for anxiety, where anything and everything can make a person feel anxious and which may trigger random panic attacks for no known reason. These are issues that can be a constant difficulty that affects our quality of life. (N.B. Sometimes general anxiety disorder may be caused as a result of an underlying and possibly undiagnosed medical condition. In the case of General Anxiety Disorder, we always write to a client's GP before working)

There are too specific direct fears, phobias, and anxieties that are linked to certain events that are upcoming in our future timeline and which connect back to earlier uncomfortable experiences. Things like a fear of flying, lifts, escalators, being in a confined space or being surrounded by too many people, fears of injections, fear of the dentist, and specific anxieties such as exams, driving test nerves, interviews, public speaking, separation anxiety. The list is quite a long list, and these are just a few.

The few examples of the issues I have cited are linked to our survival and are reactions to old past events, events that might carry no future threat at all, but when they happened those events triggered a cascade of uncomfortable feelings and reactions, typically including fear and panic and so the brain then stores that as a template for future comparison and possible reaction to, and it only needs to have similar matches as far as that part our brain is concerned which reacts to threats.
As soon as the brain finds a match or near match it leaps into action and all we can do is to wait for that anxiety to pass which seems like a lifetime ….

Our brain (the part of the brain that we call the reptilian complex because of its evolutionary age and how it functions, that part which deals with reaction and instinct, fight, flight, freeze,) thinks it is helping.

Its intent is not to cause harm, but it triggers an unwelcome emotional and sometimes physical response that can cause significant distress.

It is this limiting pattern that BWRT works with to resolve these past reactions and events, helping people contending with difficult emotional reactions to fear, panic, anxiety, etc, to become free of those reactions. You can think of it as a reset.
We can of course do this naturally; it is a natural process with no magic wand needed because it is a simple and normal part of brain storing and programming.

The issue is that most people think they cannot find the resolution, so they look and reroute back to the old pattern, essentially thinking all the time of what they do not want which has the very strong and undesirable effect of strengthening that bond within the neural pathways, making the problem worse.

The guided therapeutic process of BWRT helps to break those old patterns of feelings and behaviours and replace them with what a person experiencing those adverse emotional stimuli wants to feel instead, and to the many clients who have experienced this, it very often feels like something truly astonishing just happened, especially when they had already perhaps resigned themselves to the possibility of always having the issue even though they don’t want it. As a BWRT ®  Therapist, I have often seen BWRT® clients break into a wide smile, or simply laugh as they realise how totally different, they immediately feel.

BWRT is a guided way to help you with what your brain does naturally. It is indeed possible to reverse a process and there are many examples that can prove this. Fading memory over the long term and its later emotional reaction to the event is just one example to illustrate how we are working with a natural process.
BWRT just happens to give us a therapeutic mechanism to make it happen faster.

It is neuroscience, - no magic needed,- people may feel like something magical happened, but it is a very succinct process that enhances and restores what the brain does naturally.

A BWRT® therapist is specially trained through a very exacting training and evaluation process to simplify this process into what for most presenting issues may be just a few sessions.

BWRT ® is not just about dealing with anxieties, fears, and phobias. It is so much more and is an amazing therapeutic vehicle for great potential for positive change to lead people to create the lives they want to live.

Consider this. When you know you want to do something, for e.g., like going on a diet, or taking a qualification course that demands time, effort, discipline, and study, or quitting a bad habit, you just get on and do it. You may start well and find early success, and you may be full of enthusiasm at first and then …. You plateau and the results do not come, and you may then feel very frustrated and anxious, and then become a victim to dichotomous thinking, procrastination, and low motivation, and you may not even understand why. So, you decide to take a break.

If you drop that action or project and try to rekindle it, and no matter how hard you really try, you find that your best efforts may make you feel you cannot quite make it happen, feeling as if there is a glass ceiling or invisible barrier in the way. You may wonder what it was that helped you find that early success so easily, and you may struggle to understand why you now cannot find what seemed so simple the first time.

All of the above and more, are just a few examples of the types of issues that are exactly what BWRT was designed for, breaking through the barriers, resolving stuck issues, and finding success…And BWRT has been helping many, many, people globally since 2014 to experience permanent lasting change, with what the records show, has proven to be an extremely low recidivism rate.

Since its introduction in 2014, it has gained a reputation in the world of therapy for being a highly effective, efficient way of working with people helping them to create rapid, long-lasting changes. Below are some links to success stories from my website and features in the national press.

This testimonial is from a client I worked with in 2016 with BWRT who suffered from a very complex anxiety issue that kept them housebound for three years.

Success for a client with a lifetime Dental Phobia, taken from my Cornwall -BWRT Facebook page.

Cornwall BWRT shared a post. 8 December 2017

I have just received a further update from a client I treated for Dental Phobia almost a year ago. When this client came to see me they had never been to see a dentist in over twenty-plus years. The phobia was a learned response from a parent who had a morbid dread of blood and visiting a dentist. In just one session of BWRT® (Brain Working Recursive Therapy) that phobia was banished for good.
Since then my client has gone to visit the dentist on at least three or four occasions and when they do they usually update me. Here is the most recent received today.

"Hi, Trevor went to the dentist again yesterday and had two veneers done. An hour & a half in the chair. Hope you have a great Christmas. Best wishes. D "

A Standout Successful BWRT® case history from 2016

In December 2016 I worked successfully with a client with BWRT® over the Christmas break who contacted me presenting with very high levels of anxiety over an exam that they were due to take in early January 2017.
My client had embarked upon their chosen career path in early 2015 involving intensive training and making a major lifestyle change in moving from one end of the country to another which was in itself a huge upheaval.

So far my client had done extremely well in their various stages of studies and assessments, however, come the day of the exam it was a whole different story......The reason for their heightened state of anxiety when they contacted me soon became very clear. My client had sat the exam twice previously within a short space of time and although they were thoroughly proficient and knowledgeable, when it came to the day, the anxiety and nerves they were experiencing simply got the better of them.

They explained how because of those exam nerves they found themselves becoming even more anxious during the second exam and went on to explain how this third exam that they were due to sit was so vitally important to them as it was completely pivotal to establishing the security of their professional career in the public sector.
The upcoming exam due to be re-taken was an oral knowledge-based exam taken in front of a panel of examiners and was their last chance to pass for their placement to be confirmed in their chosen career role.

As there was very little time available to work with when I was approached to see if I could help them I knew I need something rather unique, special, and fast and so after a brief discussion I decided on BWRT to help in session 1 with the anxiety and hypnotherapy for learning and confidence in session 2.

During the Therapy, pre-talk my client had presented with a considerably heightened emotional anxiety state of a high 9 on a scale of 1-10 with one being low and 10 high. When asked just how important to them passing this exam was and how might they feel if they were unsuccessful they understandably became quite emotional and it was very important to fire that response up to make certain that it was the right emotion we were going to work with

In a session of approximately one hour working with the BWRT ® process my client’s anxiety levels virtually disappeared completely to a figure so far below 1 that they couldn’t quantify it.

When asked to access the original emotive state my client was unable to, remarking, that it was almost as if it has never happened.

A day or so afterward I wrote a post about the BWRT® session I had run on my Facebook page being certain to protect anonymity and privacy, however as my client was enjoying the rest of their Christmas break with family and friends I was unable to share much information at the time.

What follows is an update when I returned to run a hypnotherapy session.

One week later when I went back to work on reinforcement of confidence and learning when my client was asked to test the old emotive state there was still nothing there. They simply remarked again that it is as if nothing has happened and that they still feel very calm and relaxed about the forthcoming exam. The more I work with BWRT ® the more convinced I am that it is a remarkable therapy.

Update as of 11th Jan 2016.
I am very pleased to report that as of the morning of the 11th Jan I received a message from my client advising me that they had passed their exam earlier in the morning thereby securing their role in their public service vocation. In the message to me, my client observed that there was virtually no trace of panic or anxiety whatsoever. It was very nice to receive a message of thanks and I look forward to being able to post a testimonial in my client's own words very soon.

A new year .... looking back over the past.

This year in May it will be five years since I set up Hypnotherapy Solutions in Cornwall and it will be eleven years this year since I took the decision to make a life changing decision and study Hypnotherapy with a view to changing career paths and helping people to improve their lives and help them through the maze of what sometimes seemed to them unsolvable problems until they discovered Hypnotherapy.I gained my diploma after an intensive year long course passing with one of the highest grades.

Since gaining my diploma I have been helping people to create positive change in their lives for ten years and it’s been a privilege to have been able to help all of the people who have come to see me over the years.

As a compassionate person and therapist I derive a huge amount of satisfaction helping people to improve their lives. As a hypnotherapist I tend to get very different reactions from people. The two most typical being either one of great interest and curiosity or of suspicion and distance as if I'm somehow going to make someone do something against their will. Nothing could be further from the truth in fact. Hypnotherapy is about personal empowerment of helping people to break out of the trance sleep of habit and conditioned responses as a result of social conditioning and implanted self beliefs, those things that other people tell them or the negative self talk they tell themselves.

Hypnotherapy is about helping people to access their own inner wisdom, their own best resources and helping them create change within and take back control. Looking back I am very glad I made the choice to change career paths. The journey is not always easy. The hours are long, the studying and keeping abreast of change intense at times but its all been worthwhile to help people improve their lives. I love what I do.

Remember,as you engage with your new years resolutions its not about discarding the old you and making a new you. Many people start each new year with a list of resolutions that they hope to achieve.Whilst starting off with good intentions after a few weeks of progress where change was beginning to happen things may start to get get sticky and the results may not be encouraging or they may even stop for a while as a natural plateau is reached. What happens next is that they get disheartened and give up.

If you really want to change something in your life you have to go through several steps and start by making a step by step plan and review it often. The first thing is to accept things as they are and to accept yourself as you are even though you may want to change and evolve. Dont discard the old you and write yourself off. Reinventing the wheel is never a good idea, but we can perfect it! its also important to factor in the fact that things may not go to plan and that it is a good idea to manage your expectations realistically so as not to cause disappointment. If you have prepared well and have a good plan in place, when those hurdles and challenges arise you are far more likely to succeed. Unfortunately many people dont make a plan at all, they think to themselves that they need to be a new person, that somehow that existing person is flawed in some way and not worthy. That is setting oneself up for failure right away.

Dont throw away what is already unique and precious, rather evolve and become that better version of you that you may want to be. Perhaps you want to enjoy being fitter and more active by quitting smoking or losing weight and eating more healthily or maybe you want to have more confidence .... Whatever it is you want to do Hypnotherapy and BWRT can help and it may just be the best thing you ever discover and give a chance to.

Success

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will.

When the road you're trudging seems all uphill.

When the energy is low and the reasons to carry on seem few

and you want to smile, but you have to sigh.

When care is pressing you down a bit-

rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

and many a fellow turns about

when he might have won had he stuck it out.

Don't give up though the pace seems slow -

you may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than

It seems to a faint and faltering man.

Often the struggler has given up

When he might have captured the victor's cup;

and he learned too late when the night came down,

how close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -

the silver tint in the clouds of doubt.

And you never can tell how close you are,

It might be near when it seems afar;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -

It's when things seem worst that you must not quit

How hypnotherapy can help with depression and self esteem issues. A blog about a clients journey from suicidal thoughts to wellness.

Suicide is a very difficult and taboo subject to discuss but in it is sadly more and more commonplace  in society these days and affects many people from all walks of life, both rich & poor, the well educated and the poorly educated.

There have been various preconceptions generated in the press and media about suicidal personality types over the years and some of those preconceptions were not always helpful seemingly creating stereotypes. However in recent years thankfully those perceptions have changed and most enlightened people understand that what happens to people on their life journeys can create the circumstances that lead to severe depression and suicidal thoughts.

Earlier this year I attended a short course run by ASIST which stands for applied suicide intervention skills training. This course was a very valuable course which looked at a very broad spectrum of circumstances and situations and trained attendees in how to intervene in a suicide situation to keep the person safe for now and moving forwards finding them the help they need.

As a therapist I work with a broad range of presenting issues but over recent years more frequently people are coming to see me presenting with #anxiety and depression. This year I have worked with three clients from various backgrounds and various parts of the country who when they came to see me and started therapy with me were suffering serious depression and were experiencing suicidal thoughts.  The backgrounds of the presenting issues were  varied, one was relating to long term marital troubles where they could see no way out ,another was surrounding isolation and family troubles and financial problems and another was a long term sense of identity relating to childhood abandonment issues and abusive relationships.

This morning I received an email from a client who I began working with back in July. This person comes from a professional management business background and has gone through some dramatic life changes.  When this person came to see me they had already been suffering from a long term issue of loneliness, low self esteem and self worth and an identity crisis. This persons circumstances had led them to contemplate suicide and to make matters worse their GP they felt was completely unhelpful. That is when they turned to me. The journey in therapy was not always an easy one but slowly and steadily good progress was made and month by month both client and I have been able to see good improvements  using the therapeutic  evaluation tools that I use such as the ‘wheel of life’ analysis tool along with patient health questionnaire and general anxiety disorder scales.  The advantage of these tools is that it gives both client and patient an overview of how things are changing. The most important thing of course is listening to the client and taking on board how they feel and using somatic questioning to determine the quality , validity and depth of those answers which helps the client to really connect with themselves and understand themselves and judge whether those answers or how they feel reflects their own inner truth. The email this morning talks of feeling self empowered, feeling calmer and having a strong sense of self belief where they can step away from therapy and go forward into the world on their terms with confidence looking to lead and not follow and to believe in themselves once again.

To receive an email like this is very good leaving me with a very good feeling to have been instrumental through the use of applied solution focussed hypnotherapy to  able to help this person upon their life journey in making significant change and is further testimony to the power of good therapy and in particular hypnotherapy to help create positive inner change, all of this without the intervention of  anti depressants or drug therapy of any kind.

Hypnotherapy is capable of creating real lasting change in all areas of life not just anxiety and depression.
