Just in from a very happy quit smoking client who was kind enough to send me her feedback after a few sessions of Hypnotherapy. I started working with this client in early November and this is what she had to say
I thought Trevor Wales was fantastic really helped me through what i wanted to overcome and achieve, I didn’t even need all of my sessions and have been smoke free since!
Very professional, welcoming and easy to speak to !
I have been smoke free since I finished my sessions with him and couldn’t thank him enough. Feel so much better about myself.

When I started my hypnotherapy practice in Cornwall in May of 2011 one of my first few clients was a lovely lady who I helped to quite smoking.Recently we had the opportunity to catch up with one another and I am delighted to say that she is still a non smoker. This is her testimony recently emailed over to me.
Hi Trevor.

I've really tried hard to quit smoking in the past and it’s so difficult isn't it? Surely it’s because I'm addicted. I just need the nicotine fix and nicotine is addictive isn't it?
Are you really addicted? Do you really believe this? Would you kill or steal to satisfy your craving if you couldn't smoke? No, of course you wouldn't but an addiction can drive an addict to do some pretty desperate things. Smoking is a learned habit which can be unlearned which as a smoker who may have tried to stop in the past, you may disagree with reading this, but it is and it is a conditioned response that becomes more deeply entrenched with each cigarette. Eventually it becomes a subconscious automatic routine. Part of your daily life. If you’ve tried in the past to quit using willpower alone and failed you need to know the following….
In a battle between the conscious and the subconscious mind, the conscious mind invariably loses because it is almost impossible to fight a conditioned behaviour pattern and this is why stopping smoking for so many people can be so very difficult
It is the nicotine component that can become addictive….When you first started smoking you may remember that you found the taste disgusting and you can probably remember coughing and coughing, but maybe you continued to be accepted and ‘one of the crowd’
Do you really still think you’re addicted now?
Let’s take a look at this question for a while shall we? When you light up you will have gone through a few stages of conditioned patterns of behaviour. This may be instantaneous or much longer for someone trying to give up using willpower alone.
Initially you will perhaps think about having a smoke, It may be that it’s the first thing you do in the morning when you wake up or you may be down the pub sitting outside with a few mates and you always smoke with a pint or maybe you smoke when you’re bored at work and a little stressed and need a fag with your cuppa. The fact is that this is a trigger and all smokers have a trigger or flash point where they think they need a ciggy. The thought of smoking has been triggered in the mind
When the thought of smoking a cigarette has been triggered in your mind then you begin to think about the cigarette and your conditioned responses anticipate the taste and the nicotine hit and the perceived need begins to builds up and up and up until the desire to smoke gets stronger and stronger and…….
You light up and smoke and everything seems so much better, or so it seems. It doesn’t matter that deep down inside you really know that its killing you slowly and that it’s a huge waste of money. The craving has been temporarily satisfied until the next time!!!
Now if your one of the unfortunate souls who has just caved in and lit up again after going a few weeks or months, how bad does that feel? That sense of failure?
Click here to go to my blog and read my recent editorial article in the Cornish Guardian, detailing how I successfully treated Sub editor Charlotte Nicholson to easily quit smoking in just one session.
But to prove to you that you can go without a cigarette. Consider the following.
There are times in your daily routine that having just thought about having a smoke and that second stage trigger of the craving is beginning to build up in your mind and emotions, something happens to divert your attention away from this thought.
Perhaps the phone rings or you have to attend to dealing with your children or some other matter.
And if you happen to work in an environment where smoking is banned and there are no impromptu fag breaks whenever you want, you will be proving to yourself over and again that it is possible to go without smoking whether it be by distraction or otherwise
Now at this stage you may be thinking what does this prove to me?
Well, what this proves is exactly that smoking is not the NEED (for that read ADDICTION) that so many people think it is bit is it in fact a WANT!!!
If Smoking were a genuine need that you could not do without, you would behave in much the same way that a hardened drug addict behaves when they can’t get their fix. You would find yourself eventually going to all sorts of lengths as you lose control of your free will and become a slave to the drug addiction. You could never be distracted from the craving of the drug. It is a powerful argument isn’t it and I think one that you will probably begin to agree with now and see more than a glimmer of much needed hope that you can do without Cigarettes, because although the nicotine component is quite addictive, it will not take your life over to such an extent that you would feel like turning to crime to satisfy your habit.
One common factor about smokers is that they normally stay within their smoking budget except at that painful time of year when the chancellor gets his way and taxes drink and tobacco. This proves that their cigarette intake is usually consistent whether it be 10, 20, 30 or more a day, perhaps fluctuating slightly if there are sudden increases in stress levels, Perhaps it was easier years ago for smokers to be more relaxed about increasing their tobacco intake when it was not so expensive, but at over £6.00 a packet, most smokers feel the pinch and limit themselves, which once again proves that smoking is a want and not a need which can be easily controlled by external factors such as those referred to above.
There are so many more examples that we could list here and I am sure that you too will think of some of your own too. For e.g. Restaurants, Theatres, Concerts and Cinemas. Places of worship. None of these places allow smoking so if your leisure pursuit or religious practice is stronger than your ‘want’ to smoke…. You will be happily distracted for the duration. So you see this conclusively proves that smoking is indeed a WANT and not a NEED!
Now if you make comparisons to other forms of addiction such as drink drugs and gambling etc. Each time the craving is satisfied the user needs to keep on gambling, just one more time, or the junkie needs just one more fix and has to keep increasing the amount of the substance they take just to get the same level of effect.
“So you’re telling me it’s a Want and not a need?
“Well I have tried to give up many times before and I got so irritable when I tried to stop smoking and go without and I knew I would cave in, in the end. I also started comfort eating instead to try and stem my craving for Nicotine and started piling on a few pounds so this surely means that smoking is an addiction doesn’t it?”
Yes it’s true that smoking is addictive by nature, but the addiction is psychological rather than chemical so let’s go back and look once again at this question which we covered earlier on :-
Are you really addicted? Do you really believe this? Would you kill or steal to satisfy your craving if you couldn’t smoke? No, of course you wouldn’t but an addiction can drive an addict to do some pretty desperate things. Smoking is a learned habit which can be unlearned which as a smoker who may have tried to stop in the past, you may disagree with reading this, but it is and it is a conditioned response that becomes more deeply entrenched with each cigarette.
Most choices we make as people are usually for benefit or pleasure or to contain a difficult situation form getting worse. So people always tend to make the decisions which will give them the most reward or pleasure.
The difficulty around making the choice to quit smoking is twofold, as we tend to play down the immediate benefits we will get from giving up smoking, whether it is a financial benefit or a health benefit or an emotional benefit ………..And we tend to understate the continuing health risks and huge financial costs of continuing to smoke.
We are in denial to some extent and if were not careful it can become the old results versus excuses see-saw.
The problem around the reasons to quit smoking- is that they are abstract until they happen. Whether it is a health warning from a GP, or a nagging family relative, or financial. We can’t see them yet because they are not yet concrete, they haven’t yet been experienced because it is in the future.
Additionally smokers are often being told that there is no benefit in smoking. Well when I smoked, I would have put up a robust argument to counter that as it simply isn’t true. If it was true the tobacco industry would have folded up long, long ago.
Without doubt every smoker you talk to will tell you that it helps them relax or chill out. And it’s true that there is temporary high nicotine high and a light headed feeling as oxygen supply is temporarily diminished and blood vessels contract. This high is just transitory and it doesn’t take all the stress and anxiety away. It just makes things appear easier to cope with. It just provides short time relief for a while.
Now, without doubt smokers will try and sell non-smokers on the benefits of having that stress relief as many times a day as they smoke, for the reason they continue to smoke and on the surface of that argument it doesn’t seem half bad does it? But as medical science has conclusively proven this can and usually does come at a high cost, and then it can sometimes be too late. So why not take back control of your life today?
So Hypnotherapy can help me quit smoking? Are you serious?
The answer to that is yes on both counts!
All Hypnotherapy well-crafted, uses positively phrased suggestions that can help replace unwanted beliefs or unhelpful, damaging behavioural patterns (such as smoking) with new improved beneficial modes of thought and behaviour that can create real tangible benefits for you to Quit Smoking….. and because these are delivered at a subconscious level, they sink in…… and as they become accepted by the subconscious mind the subconscious and the conscious mind become in rapport with one another and hey presto, that old negative behaviour is replaced with something far more desirable for you the client who may have struggled for years trying to give up using just willpower alone…and the effects can be felt not in six months’ time, but straight away!
So What about if you started to feel healthier immediately because your breathing starts to improve in a short time period of a few days. And you notice you stop coughing and stop feeling so short of breath? And maybe you start to sleep better and to feel less tense and more relaxed?
Maybe you notice too that your clothes, hair, house and car stop smelling like an ashtray and people start to notice and compliment you?
You will certainly notice the financial impact almost straight away….. Within a week at least, say you smoke 20 a day, a conservative estimate. In a week at around £6.00 a packet you will have saved £42.00. That’s £180.00 a month and over £2000.00 a year!
And What if you felt a tremendous sense of pride and pleasure now that you are a non-smoker? These are the benefits that a quit smoking hypnosis treatment programme will bestow… and of course there would be no need to smoke anymore –because you are now getting more out of not smoking than you were from smoking!
How does that work then?
It’s a bit like re-writing your hard drive part of your brain for the programme for your attitudes towards smoking……... …………… And if you’re wondering how all of that can work?
Do you remember that subliminal advertising was banned from the TV and Cinema? It was banned because the conscious mind could not see the images appear on screen as they flashed up so quickly, but the subconscious mind could and because it bypassed the conscious mind so quickly, the suggestion became quickly accepted…. and so the suggestion was planted that product xyz was the best thing since sliced bread.
This form of advertising was banned because it was deemed to be unethical. However, hypnotherapy works for the good of the client with the clients consent and because the conscious mind is bypassed in the same way as subliminal advertising works the suggestion becomes deeply rooted and very quickly becomes part of a new behaviour pattern.
So…..! If you really want to quit the dreaded ciggy and take back control of your choices rather than being driven by a compulsive want that is addictive in nature then Quit smoking hypnotherapy is probably one of the most successful ways to achieve your goal.
So now….. what about that tremendous sense of pride and pleasure you’re going to get when you are a non-smoker and the feeling of knowing that there is Well no need to smoke – because you are getting more out of not smoking than you were from smoking?
Isn’t it time to take action and take the bull by the horns today, right now and do something about it?
